Scott DuBois - Guitar -
Praised by The New York Times as a guitarist who “has begun to make waves” and a musician who has “exploratory yet melodic sensibilities, serious compositional ambitions, and cohesive looseness against complex subtleties,” guitarist Scott DuBois has spent the last fifteen years performing internationally at jazz clubs and festivals. Scott moved from the Chicago area to New York City in 1996. During this time he has performed and recorded with musicians such as David Liebman, Tony Malaby, and Chris Potter while also obtaining his Masters of Music degree from the Manhattan School of Music. Scott has received critical acclaim from such prestigious publications as The New York Times, Jazz Times, All About Jazz, and Cadence Magazine as well as many other publications in The United States and Europe for his individual style of playing and composing. The Scott DuBois Quartet began in 2000, performing Scott's original compositions. In 2002, Scott DuBois recorded his debut CD Monsoon for the Soul Note record label. The same group recorded their second CD Tempest in June of 2005, also released on the Soul Note label. Scott DuBois currently lives in New York City performing regularly at the legendary 55 Bar and tours Europe and North America often with his group and other groups
Gebhard Ullmann - Tenor and Soprano Saxophones and Bass Clarinet -
Gebhard Ullmann was born in 1957 and has been living and working as a professional composer, saxophonist (tenor and soprano), bass clarinetist and flutist (piccolo, concert, alto, bass) in Berlin since 1983. He is considered one of the leading personalities in today's Berlin and International Jazz Scene and recorded more than 30 CDs as a leader/co-leader for Labels such as Soul Note (Italy), Leo Records (UK), CIMP Records (USA), Between the Lines (Germany), 482 Music (USA), Songlines Recordings (Canada), Drimala Records (USA), Intuition Records (Germany).
He received several awards for his work i.e. the Julius Hemphill Composition Award ('99), the Deutsche Phonoakademie Award ('83), one of the first SWF Jazz Awards ('87) and several awards from the City of Berlin (90's). His "Tá Lam" project has been nominated best jazz CD of the year by the German Schallplattenkritik and he toured with his music Europe as well as Africa, Australia, New Zealand, the U.S., South East Asia , Canada, Mexico ...
Since 1993 Ullmann is a recording artist for Soul Note and has been commuting to New York City. His releases have been widely critically acclaimed on both sides of the Atlantic and all been listed in the US-college-radio-jazz-charts. 2005 he was listed in the Downbeat Critics Poll in the category rising star for the first time.
Ullmann’s working bands are: the New York quintet "Basement Research" (w. Julian Argüelles, Steve Swell, John Hebert, Gerald Cleaver), the Berlin woodwind/accordion ten-piece project "Tá Lam Zehn", "The Clarinet Trio" (with Juergen Kupke and Michael Thieke), the cooperative band "Conference Call" (with Michael Jefry Stevens, Joe Fonda and George Schuller), the "Ullmann/Swell 4" with (Steve Swell, Hill Greene and Barry Altschul) and trios with "Art Lande and Chris Dahlgren" and "BassX3" (with Chris Dahlgren and Peter Herbert on basses and G.U. on bassflute/bassclarinet).
He is also a member of the "Günter Lenz Springtime", George Schuller's "Schulldogs", the Berlin 11-piece "Stereo Lisa", Sadiq Bey's "Schwartzegeist/Sun Ra Project" (spoken word and music) and performed in several programs with the actor Otto Sander.
Ullmann worked together with Paul Bley, Andy Emler, Han Bennink, Satoko Fujii, William Parker, Barry Altschul, Herb Robertson, Marvin 'Smitty' Smith, Ellery Eskelin, Bob Moses, Keith Tippett, Frank Gratkowski, Sergeij Starostin, Tiger Okoshi, Bobby Previte, Ernst Ludwig Petrowsky, Glen Moore, Trilok Gurtu, Ab Baars, Kevin Norton, Lauren Newton, Sylvie Courvoisier, Steve Swell, Steve Argueelles, Lee Konitz, Alexander v. Schlippenbach, Hans Hassler, Willem Breuker, Tom Rainey, Carlos Bica, Enrico Rava, Rita Marcotulli, Michael Moore, Bob Stewart, Dieter Glawischnig, Matt Wilson, Ivo Papasov, the ensemble "Percussion De Guinee", the "European Radio Orchestra" and many others.
Eivind Opsvik - Bass -
Eivind Opsvik is from Oslo, Norway, and started out playing the drums at a very early age. In his teens he gradually switched to bass while also spending lots of time experimenting with recording on a 4 track tape recorder. In 1998 Eivind moved to New York City to be a part of the rich music scene. He currently plays in a number of cutting-edge New York groups like Opsvik & Jennings, Kris Davis Quartet, David Binneys Out of Airplanes with Bill Frisell, Tone Collector, UP, Hari Honzu and Ben Gerstein Collective. He recently also did a recording with pianist Jacob Sacks, Mat Maneri on viola and drum legend Paul Motian. Eivind's own group OVERSEAS is playing NYC clubs like 55Bar, Barbes and Zebulon and last toured Europe in May of this year. Fresh Sound Records released his first CD as a leader "Overseas" and it was very well received in the New York Times and Downbeat (listed "Best CD's of 2003" ). In 2005 "Overseas II" was released and was along with "Tone Collector" and "Opsvik & Jennings; Floyel Files" described by JazzTimes as "The Most Imaginative album trilogy of 2005".
Jeff Davis - Drums -
Jeff Davis, born in Colorado, began playing marimba at the age of nine and later studied classical percussion at the University of Northern Colorado. Jeff then moved to New York in 1999 to pursue a Masters degree at the Manhattan School of Music and has become increasing active in the jazz community. Jeff performs with a number of creative ensembles in New York, including the Kris Davis Quartet, Eivind Opsvik's Overseas, Tone Collector, the Pedro Giraudo Jazz Orchestra, the Peter Van Huffel
Quintet, and the RIDD Quartet. Jeff has performed with such artists as Tony Malaby, Chris Speed, Art Lande, Brad Shepik, Reggie Workman and Chris Potter. Jeff has toured Europe and China and has performed at several prominent jazz festivals, including the North Sea Jazz Festival, the Oslo Jazz Festival, and the Ear Shot Jazz Festival. Jeff has been featured on a number of recordings including Eivind Opsvik's Overseas and Overseas II, Tone Collector, Kris Davis' Lifespan and The Slightest Shift, and recently with Jostein Gulbrandsen and Peter Van Huffel.
